- Information on
the project
The
title of operation is Hellenic Humanitarian and Development
Network (H.H.D.N.) in Serbia. The operation is located in 11
regions (50 municipalities) of Central and Southern Serbia. The
objective for the development of the H.H.D.N. in Serbia is
the strenghtening and enhancement of the relations, the
cooperation links and the understanding between the Greek and the
Serbian people as well as the relief of the less privileged and
the sustainable development in Serbia. H.H.D.N. consists of 54
humanitarian societies which take care of registered less
privileged people such as the blind, deaf, paraplegic, etc. and 15
development partners identified in November. The project will be
carried out through distribution of food aid parcels (flour, rice,
powder milk, pasta, beans, jam and canned meat). Two distributions
are planned for the period of six months for the same beneficiary
families. Cooperation with seven Red Cross societies will help the
School Kitchen Programmes.
The
project titled "Food Aid to Less Privileged Groups of People
in Central and Southern Serbia" within the framework of
developing Hellenic Humanitarian and Development Network has come
to an end. All the societies concerned received the second round
of food aid packages through the two final distributions performed
in January and March, 2001. We are working towards further
strengthening of the Hellenic Humanitarian and Development Network
in Serbia through the forthcoming development projects. European
Perspective organised a series of training seminars on
microfinances for its 15 development partners - local NGOs in
February and March. All our partners wrote projects on the local
community development through microcredit lines, which are soon to
be promoted in a joint publication. European Perspective has,
together with its local development partners, submitted a draft
proposal to the European Commission for Human Rights and
Democracy under the subject: "Promotion of pluralism on
political and social level by strengthening institutions and
organisations and promotion of independent and responsible media
and free press".
January-March:
All of our humanitarian partner societies spent January and
February working on final annual reports and plans for the
following year. In February, Oxfam organised a two-day
seminar in Kragujevac for the handicapped with a view to forming a
Centre for the self-support of the handicapped. The Ministry of
Health awarded the Society of Muscular Distrophy from Kraljevo for
their anti-smoking campaign. The Nis Multiple Sclerosis Society
organised a humanitarian concert as well as an evening of poetry.
As regards sports activities, the Nis societies were active in the
local chess competition while the other societies are mostly
preparing for suchlike events. The action of removing the curbs is
still in progress in several towns in Serbia, and an interesting
project is soon to be realised by Save the Children in
Pirot - the Mentally Retarded Society will be provided with a toy
library. We would like to put special emphasis on the endeavours
of the 3 Kraljevo Societies (Cerebral Paralysis, MS and Paraplegic
Society) to provide financial support for the building of their
premises and on the Kragujevac Cerebral Paralysis Society fighting
for the building of a specialised hospital for the handicapped.
On
the occasion of completing the above mentioned project, this issue
contains a supplement summarizing all our activities in the period
from September, 2000 until March, 2001. The review includes
information on our Humanitarian Network (two rounds of food aid
distribution to all the humanitarian societies concerned) as well
as on our Development Network (identifying 15 local NGOs as
development partners, Conference held in Belgrade on 10/12/2000
promoting their partnership with European Perspective,
educational seminars on microfinances and jointly written
projects).
