THE MISSION OF THE CIVIC READING ROOM (GC) “PIRGOS” is the civil society development through training, informing and enhancement of active participation of the citizens of Pirot Region and South-East Serbia in this process for we believe in the equality of all people. Our goal is not only to influence the citizens to face current problems but also to assist them in practice to adjust to the circumstances of transition. “Pirgos” has organised several trainings, seminars and forums, related to this particular problem area.

"From embargo towards integration" is the title of the seminar whose goal was to provide the export-import businessmen with the necessary information from the domain of foreign trading. For two weekends lectures were organised in five thematic fields: marketing and consumer psychology, foreign exchange system in Yugoslavia and foreign credit relations, modern trading trends, customs system in Yugoslavia and international transport, freight forwarding and foreign trading law and insurance. The lecturers were Vesna Stevanovic, psychologist, Gordana Lazarevic, M.A. in economics, Prof Dr Sreten Cuzovic, Prof Dr Bozidar Raicevic and Prof Dr Moma Zivkovic. The project was financially supported by Freedom House.

On 28 June there was a seminar for lawyers and trade union presidents from Pirot, addressing the following topics "Practical application of Labour Act, with special emphasis on service agreements, collective agreements and other enactments in practice" and "Redundant workers’ rights". The lecturers were graduated lawyers Emilija Djoric, Director of Labour Exchange Branch Office in Pirot, Mirjana Milutinovic, Bakers Company Staff Director and Milorad Krstic, Project Coordinator. The participants estimated that the seminar was held at the right time and addressed the right subject and workers’ pressing problems, and commended the organiser and expressed their gratitude to ABA CEELI for approving the project. 

For NGO members from Pirot, Babusnica, Bela Palanka and Dimitrovgrad, GC "Pirgos" organised the seminar "The entrepreneur and entrepreneurial environment", with the lecturer Radojica Mojsijev, Director of the Regional Centre for the Development of Small and Medium Enterprises and Entrepreneurs. The goal of the seminar was the forming of a consulting network for the development of entrepreneurial environment "Partner", whose certificates were given to all the attendants. The seminar lasted from 12 to 14 July.

                "Start your own business" is the slogan of the fast development programme (KICK START PROGRAMME) by CHF and the Comunity Development Board, within which several forums were organised in the Pirot Region villages. The forum lecturers were economists Ivana Mitrovic and Milan Djordjevic and the topics were strategic planning, S.W.O.T. community analysis, modern approach to agribusiness and KS business plan rules and guidelines. This programme alleviates the development of creative business ideas of the individuals from rural communities.

There is an ongoing campaign for the promotion of the Law on National Minorities and of the Law on Ethnic Tolerance - "Serbia is our home, too", run by the Civic Initiative Board from Nis in 19 South and East Serbia towns. The campaign includes the distributing of promotional material. GC “Pirgos” was partner of the Civic Initiative Board in the process of conducting the campaigns for economic reforms, jurisprudence reforms, local self-management enhancement and the anti-corruption campaign. 

The Roma Asociation "Pralipe" has provided scholarships in the course of June and July for Roma students, signed a preliminary agreement for the construction of the Roma educational centre and realised the action "Play is a gift"- Pralipe, children’s friend. All the activities of PRALIPE Association are realised in cooperation with GC PIRGOS.

We plan to organise a three-day seminar that should initiate cooperation between the local authorities, businessmen and  NGOs from all four Pirot Region municipalities.
