The current focus of NGO work in West Serbia is the enhancement of local self-management work and strengthening of cooperation between NGOs and municipal authorities. This trend can be explained by the new republic law on local self-management and  by the necessity of strengthening the cooperation between local authorities and NGOs in solving the accrued social problems in this region that can only be solved through joint identifying of priorities and their resolution.

In cooperation with another ten NGOs from West Serbia, the Civic Reading Room «Libergraf» started the campaign «Better law for better life» realised in eleven municipalities: Uzice, Pozega, Arilje, Kosjeric, Ivanjica, Lucani, Cajetina, Bajina Basta, Nova Varos, Priboj and Prijepolje. The goals of the campaign are to increase direct communication between local government officials and citizens, to enhance the work of municipal services and to promote the advantages of the new local self-management law. The campaign activities include a media campaign in the form of TV and radio jingles and documentary films, a street action through giving out leaflets and sticking posters, and open town meetings with representatives of NGOs, municipal government and interested citizens as participants. The campaign «Better law for better life» is part of the national campaign «Future is Europe» , financed by USAID/DTI.

The projectDIALOGUE 5: Cooperation between non-governmental organisations and local self-management in five municipalities of West Serbia” is a long-term project of the  Centre for the Development of Non-Profit Sector in West Serbia, aimed at the enhancement  of cooperation between local self-management and non-governmental organisations through defining priorities and ways of their resolution in five municipalities of West Serbia (Valjevo, Sabac, Uzice, Bajina Basta and Pozega), where the NGO sector is relatively developed, in order to improve local community development, affirm civic initiatives and civil society ideas as key factors in democracy development. The project activities are being realised by way of three town meetings, a seminar and a TV broadcast in every target municipality. The project duration is ten months (March - December 2002). The project has been realised in Valjevo (the protocol on cooperation between NGOs and the local self-management has been signed) and Sabac, and it is being implemented in Uzice at present.
